Where LangSmith is better2 CONCESSIONS

Start with what they do well

  • Their alerting is more mature than ours

LangSmith has the most complete turnkey alerting in this category today. We do not match it yet. If alerting is your deciding factor, they currently win that row.

  • If you are all-in on LangChain, the integration is hard to beat

Framework-native tracing that requires no thought is worth real money, and we are framework-agnostic by design rather than deeply integrated with any one framework.

Where we think they fall short

Our actual criticisms

Teams whose bill grows with headcount rather than usage, and teams who want the observability backend to be swappable independently of the agent framework.

  1. 01

Per-seat pricing scales with your team, not your usage

Plus is $39 per seat per month. Five engineers is $195/mo in seats before a single trace is counted; ten is $390. Nothing about an observability tool gets more valuable because a second engineer opens it, and per-seat pricing is the most frequently cited reason teams say they left.

  2. 02

Trace-based allowances sit awkwardly on agent workloads

One agent action can emit dozens of spans. A 10k-trace allowance is generous for a chatbot and tight for an agent that plans, retrieves, calls four tools and spawns a sub-agent per request. Overage then arrives on two axes — compute (LCU) and storage (LSU) — so the bill is harder to predict than a single unit price.

  3. 03

The lock-in is structural, not contractual

Studio, Deployment and Hub are genuinely useful and they put your agent runtime on the vendor. That is a different kind of commitment from sending traces somewhere, and it is much harder to reverse.

A marked cell is the stronger option on that row. We did not omit rows we lose.

Don't switch if…

When LangSmith is the right answer

If your agents are built on LangGraph, you rely on LangSmith's alerting today, and per-seat pricing is not a problem at your team size, switching costs you more than it saves. We would rather you stayed than churned in a month.

And if you do want to try ours

The integration is OpenTelemetry, so trying SouthBase does not mean removing LangSmith — you can point the same instrumentation at both and compare the output on your own traffic.
